Oropouche Cases Surge in the Region of the Americas

Situation Update: August 1, 2024

Key Points:

  • 8078 confirmed cases of Oropouche reported between January and July 2024.
  • Five countries in the region have reported cases.
  • Increase in cases prompts epidemiological alert.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an epidemiological alert regarding the surge in Oropouche cases in the Region of the Americas. As of July 16, 2024, 7688 confirmed cases have been reported in five countries. Considering the recent detection of new cases and the increase in reported cases, PAHO has issued an alert to enhance surveillance and response measures.

Oropouche is a mosquito-borne viral disease that typically causes fever, headaches, muscle pain, and joint pain. In severe cases, it can lead to neurological complications and even death. The virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito, which is also responsible for transmitting other viruses such as dengue and Zika.

The increase in Oropouche cases is a concern for public health authorities in the region. PAHO is urging countries to strengthen surveillance and vector control measures to prevent further spread of the virus. Individuals are also advised to take protective measures against mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and installing mosquito nets.
