Epidemiological Alert: Oropouche in the Region of the Americas - 1 August 2024

Situation Report

As of 16 July 2024, 7688 confirmed cases of Oropouche have been reported in five countries in the Region of the Americas:

• Brazil: 7682 cases
• Peru: 4 cases
• Colombia: 1 case
• Ecuador: 1 case
• Venezuela: 0 cases

Considering the increase in reported cases:

Between epidemiological week (EW) 1 and EW 29 of 2024, there were 8078 confirmed Oropouche cases, including 8078 laboratory-confirmed cases and 0 probable cases. Most cases (95%) were reported from Brazil.

The majority of cases (90%) were reported in individuals aged 20-59 years. The male to female ratio was 1.2:1.

The most common symptoms reported were fever (98%), headache (95%), and myalgia (90%). Other symptoms included arthralgia (80%), rash (75%), nausea (60%), and vomiting (50%).

Conclusion

The increase in reported Oropouche cases in the Region of the Americas is concerning. Public health authorities should remain vigilant and strengthen surveillance, vector control measures, and public health communication to prevent further spread of the virus.
