The Lionesses had fought back from 2-0 down to level the scores in normal time, but two errors in extra-time gave the Netherlands a dramatic victory in their Nations League clash. Jill Roord scored the winner in the 116th minute after Nikita Parris had gifted the ball to the Dutch in her own half.
It was a disappointing end to the year for England, who had won their previous four matches under Wiegman. The Dutch, meanwhile, will be delighted to have got one over on their rivals, who they will face again in the World Cup next summer.
England will now turn their attention to the Arnold Clark Cup in February, where they will face Belgium, Italy and South Korea.
