Lead Poisoning Linked to Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches

111 Cases Confirmed, Investigation Ongoing

Schnucks Brand Also Recalled

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches after they were linked to lead poisoning in toddlers. To date, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has counted 111 confirmed cases of lead and/or chromium poisoning in connection with the applesauce pouches. Two additional brands of products are also subject to recall: Certain Schnucks cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety packs.

The lead contamination in recalled cinnamon applesauce pouches that potentially poisoned at least 65 children may have been caused by the cinnamon ingredient, according to a monthslong investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration into applesauce pouches tainted with lead. The agency has not yet released its final report, but it said in a statement that it "has not found any evidence of lead contamination in any other food products."
