Twenty-three Goals Scored in High-Scoring Affair
Manchester City secured a thrilling 6-5 aggregate victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday night, following a 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium. The two sides combined for 23 goals in the two legs of the tie, making it one of the most entertaining and high-scoring matches in recent Champions League history.
Manchester City came into the match with a 4-3 advantage from the first leg in Madrid. They took the lead in the 12th minute through a stunning strike from Kevin De Bruyne. Real Madrid equalized through Vinicius Jr. in the 21st minute, but City restored their lead through Gabriel Jesus just before halftime.
Real Madrid came out strong in the second half and equalized again through Karim Benzema in the 55th minute. However, City refused to be denied and took the lead for good through Phil Foden in the 73rd minute. Despite late pressure from Real Madrid, City held on to secure their place in the semifinals.
The win was a major triumph for Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola. It is the first time the club has reached the Champions League semifinals since 2016. They will now face Liverpool in the semifinals, in a repeat of the 2018 final.
